We sat down with Gillian Camm, co-author of the insightful book Board Talk. With a wealth of experience as a working mother and board member, Gillian shares the inspiration behind the book, key takeaways for current and aspiring board members, and her perspective on diversity and inclusion in the boardroom.
What inspired you to write the book?
Gillian Camm: Kathryn Bishop and I have been friends for over two decades, and during our frequent conversations, we realised there were numerous aspects of our experiences as working mothers and board members that we wished we had known beforehand. As we delved into discussions about the various boards we sat on, we noticed common struggles and governance issues across different sectors. We felt compelled to address this gap by shedding light on crucial conversations that every board should be having.
Why should our candidates read the book?
Gillian Camm: Board Talk is not just for seasoned independent directors; it’s also for individuals who aspire to serve on boards but haven’t yet had the opportunity. Our book offers valuable insights into board dynamics, governance challenges, and effective communication strategies. By exploring 18 crucial conversations, readers gain a comprehensive understanding of what it takes to navigate the complexities of boardroom dynamics.
Could you share a golden nuggets for current and aspiring board members?
Gillian Camm: One key takeaway from the book is the concept of “risky behaviours” in group settings, where individuals may behave differently than they would on their own. Recognising these behaviours empowers board members to challenge them effectively and foster a culture of accountability. Additionally, our “conversational kitbag” provides practical advice on asking powerful questions, giving constructive feedback, and addressing underlying concerns within the boardroom.
What is one challenge you faced as a woman during your career?
Throughout my career, I’ve encountered challenges related to gender bias, such as the assumption that there was a quota for female hires. For example, when applying for a graduate training position, I was informed that they had already hired one “girl” and needed permission to hire another. These experiences underscore the importance of promoting diversity and inclusion within boardrooms, where diverse perspectives lead to more robust decision-making processes.
